Mr. Rajmohan Gandhi, a former Parliamentarian and writer released his sensational book-’Mohandas -a true story of a man, his people and an Empire‘.The book answers our queries about his youth, his personnel life, his struggles, his shortcomings. Admitting to be amazed by his multi dimensional personality, Sonia Gandhi said ‘He was a saint but also a shrewd political strategist, a thinker as well as a man of action. The power of a man was much larger than any of the myths and legends that shroud him.” The book weighs more than 600 pages and is priced at Rs.650 .The book has also been in the news for its description of Gandhi’s relationship with Sarla Devi, a married Bengali woman. We do have enough reasons to believe what is written in the book as it is authored by his grandson himself. Don’t we? His grandson acquaints us with every event of his life, how unimportant they may seem but they reveal the truer Gandhi to us..
However at first, many of us were confused by the objectives of Mr. Gandhi behind this astounding book but he made himself clear as he said ‘The Sarla Devi episode in his life establishes his humanity. To suppress any information on Gandhi would have meant doing injustice to what he stood for all his life - truth. I have only presented the facts as a scholar not a sensationalist journalist‘. The book covers events starting from his birth to loss of his father, his association of sex with sin to his 18 years in South Africa, his life in ashram to his relationships with his wife, an Englishwoman Miraben and Sarla Devi. So, it can be positively concluded that the intentions of the writer are clearly to show us a more humane side of a leader who inspired millions in his times and continues to do that.
